Will wonders never cease?!! You remember that I was leaving to make salad for dinner after bemoaning the fact that I didn’t know how to get in touch with my Lakota friends in South Dakota? Well, I was true to my word – got out all the veggies and started peeling and chopping. And the phone rang.
Not wanting to stop, I asked my son to get the call. He checked caller ID and said it was an “unknown caller” as he picked up the receiver. I was happy I’d had him pick up the call — then he told me who it was. It was my friend in South Dakota.
Needless to say, the salad waited while I took the call. They were doing okay, she said. The family of 5 is staying in a motel room, still waiting for more permanent housing. She couldn’t stand living with other people anymore. She couldn’t take the rez anymore. She has already found a job as a housekeeper. Her husband is taking day work right now. The oldest of the three daughters is watching my “godchild” during the day. They are trying to find a car they can afford. The middle daughter ran away again when they got to Rapid City and police are out looking for her. She needs minutes for her phone.
It wasn’t all good news, obviously. But it was good to hear. It was also one of those things that make you wonder about prayers being answered or thoughts being communicated across great distances.
Anyway, I was so happy to have news, I had to share it. I thought I’d also share one of the “water places” I photographed while we were on vacation. It’s the oxbow bend of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park. I hope it brings you a small measure of pleasure.
