Wow! I got to watch both the competition and results shows after all. The meeting I had Monday night got out at quarter to 8 instead of 9 PM. By the time I got home, I did miss the first dance, which was Mel & Maks. But they scored fairly well, so I guess they didn’t need me. They had done a Cha Cha, which I went to the ABC full episode player to see before writing this. It was very good. This was the least costume Mel has worn-looking for votes one way or another,I guess. Judges: 28.
Marie & Jonathan were asked to do the Samba. This was the dance that Marie fainted after completing the first time around. Their routine was good, entertaining but not technically excellent. I didn’t think it looked like “winner” material. Judges: 24.
Helio & Julianne danced third in this round. They did the jive. I liked it – lots of energy and fun. The judges were less impressed than I, however, citing technical errors that had eluded me. Their scores weren’t particularly strong, two 8’s and a 9, putting Helio just one point up on Marie. Judges: 25
The second round was the Free Style for all three couples. In this dance, the contestants chose the dance, the music, the costumes – everything. It was interesting to see the dances reflect the celebs’ personalities.
Mel & Maks danced first again. The choreography was a bit edgy and a bit hip hop. It had lots of flash, with lifts and tricks. But for me it was disjointed – there was not a lot of continuity or “flow” from one move to the next. Judges: 27
Marie & Jonathan danced next. They should have stayed backstage. What on earth were they thinking?! The concept was cute: Marie (who is a doll maker) was a doll who needed to be wound up and was very uncoordinated. That’s where cuteness ended. The concept was very poorly executed. The costume and especially the make-up: atrocious!!! It was a caricature of a doll – garish! The choreography was awkward and did not show Marie at her best. Bruno probably said it best, although not “politically correctly,” when he described the dance as “loopy – a cross between Baby Jane and Bride of Chucky.” Judges: 21.
Helio & Julianne had a racing theme for their Free Style. It was fabulous! Excellent choreography, fun music. It really let Helio’s personality shine. And the lifts! For the women, lifts mean being lifted by an experienced dancer. For men, it means lifting a gifted dancer when you have no experience doing that – being responsible for your partner’s well-being. Helio did a credible job. Judges: 30.
I was surprised to learn that the results show was going to be a 2 hour show. How long could they possibly drag out picking one couple out of three as the winner?
It turned out there were many, many strolls down memory lane. Maybe too many. There were dances by most of the celebs who had been previously eliminated. Floyd couldn’t dance – he’s training for a fight on December 8. Wayne had been told by his doctors not to dance due to some health issues. Not a big loss.
The guest performer was Celine Dion. She always performs well and I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t been a victim of Celine’s pre-tour television exposure blitz. I have seen her on several shows including an Oprah show devoted completely to her. She sang the song from the movie Titanic, “My Heart will Go On.” Later she sang her new single, “Taking Chances.”
Right off the top, they eliminated one couple. Perhaps even Osmond fans could not understand the Free Style dance Marie & Jonathan had done, because they did not save her this week. That gust of wind you heard outside your windows was really my huge sigh of relief when they announced that Marie and Jonathan had been eliminated. I give her lots of credit for what she accomplished but she did not deserve to win this dance competition based on her skills.
Both Mel & Maks and Helio & Julianne danced one additional competitive dance. Both couples scored 30’s.
Finally, Helio & Julianne were crowned the champions and Helio was honored with the famous “Mirrored Ball Trophy.” Helio’s smile lit up the room.
He deserved to win. It certainly made me smile!
