Yesterday I woke up and wondered who had driven the big rig hauling double over my side of the bed while I’d been sleeping. Only meds and more sleep helped me have a tolerable day.
Today I woke up and wondered who I was and what had been done with my old body. I felt better than I had in weeks. My energy was good and my pain level was 1-2 (the kind of pain that you have to sit down and think about to know it’s there). How did this happen? I have no idea! But I decided to make the most of it.
I started with a shower. Then I put the dark laundry in to wash. While the washer did it’s thing, I washed the dishes.
I sat down and called South Dakota. I had gotten an e-mail from my Lakota friends that they were running out of propane. Since it’s still winter on the rez, this is an emergency. Propane = heat. No propane = no heat. My phone call was to a propane provider. At least it was supposed to be. The number my friend supplied was a wrong number. Okay . . . no problem . . . off to the internet. I got the number from the Pine Ridge Chamber of Commerce web site. Or so I thought. I called the number listed, only to find that it, too, was a wrong number. Great! Fortunately, the woman whose home I reached happened to know the correct number (she probably gets a lot of wrong number calls). One more call – I finally reached my objective. I was hoping to use a credit card to buy the propane, but they only accept checks or money order. I told them I would send a check for a certain amount. Since they will be in the correct part of the reservation tomorrow, they will deliver the gas, even though my check won’t be there yet. Trust is a wonderful thing! The check is already in the mail.
I took some time to put the laundry in the dryer, then proceeded to answer a couple of other e-mail correspondences I’d received. Both related to fibromyalgia. I’ve said before, I don’t claim to be an expert in fibromyalgia. But living with it for over 40 years gives one a certain amount of understanding. For a long time I kept logs of symptoms and logs of what was going on in my life. I even graphed out the pain ratings over the course of several years and showed it to my doctor to show the cyclical way the pain was related to my menstrual cycle. And I try to keep up with it by reading and such. I have tried to be in tune with my body to learn what helped and what made things worse. The biggest triggers are hormones and stress. Imagine those two things being related!
I’ve ordered a couple of pair of slacks today, to replace a couple of pair that are wearing out. I don’t plan to buy much in the way of new clothes until I lose most of the weight after surgery. But as far as I know, I can’t go around naked without creating a stir. So things will have to be replaced for now.
I packed up and addressed a box of books to go out to the Oglala Lakota College Library. It’s the only library on the reservation that’s open to the public. They are in the process of setting up satellite libraries in the small communities as well as maintaining a “Build Your Own Library” program for the children. I can’t imagine a child without books! These books will be going out USPS – Library rate. That will help a lot!
Supper is in the oven and I’m looking forward to watching the first result show of the new “Dancing with the Stars” season. I’m hoping to walk on the treadmill while I watch it – kill two birds with one stone. But we also have a couple of errands to run after we eat, so we’ll see how the energy levels are by 8 PM!
The laundry is folded and put away. I’ve got half an hour before I have to work on the rest of supper. Hmmm………
I was just thinking that perhaps I should take a bit of a break now – watch Oprah’s show about compulsive hoarding (my mother was never as bad as the folks she has on!) and get off my feet for half an hour.
