I wrote one post about how much I hated the commercials for the drug Lyrica, which is being pushed as a fibromyalgia treatment, even though its original development had nothing to do with fibromyalgia. Although there have been subsequent versions that do not portray fibro sufferers as whiney women, there is still no good Lyrica-fibromyalgia commercial. Gratefully they don’t run as often as they used to run.
However, that one post has generated the most hits of any of my fibromyalgia posts, as well as the most comments. I recently received a wonderful comment that I want to repost here if you don’t check the comments out. I loved it and it has fired up my fantasy.
“I totally agree with you on the commercial. I can’t believe someone would make us look like such babies, when we battle everyday to just get out of bed…. As a matter of fact, I am on Lyrica, and tapering off, and the withdrawls are worse than the disease itself!! Oh my goodness, what a horrible drug to take to begin with. They act in the commercial like you will be back to work in no time, or, you just need a hug but it’s going to hurt, so you are going to cry…. Oh goodness… I’ve just recently had to go on disability through my work, and will be going back in March, unless they come out with a miracle by then. So people think we are supposed to be “all better” now that they have a drug for Fibro, yeah right. I worked 60 hour weeks as a bank manager, totally stressful, before I was given short term disability, and worked for a year doing that job before that, before I was even diagnosed… Of course now they think I should be all better because the Lyrica commercial told them so. The reality is, I am on 11 pills a day, I went down from 24, and let me tell ya, nothing works perfectly. Now I am in for the worst, Lyrica withdrawls… You would think that being a bank manager, working so hard at it, and putting in all those hours would help with the disability, but no, I am 20 years old, and they think I am just wanting pain killers and attention! I have been told I just talk about Fibro for attention, although I only talk about it to fellow sufferers and family on occasion, but of course, the commercials make it seem like that is TRUE. We are all just crying, miserable babies with aches and pains. If that were true, I could just take a frickin’ Tylenol. Instead, I am on the strongest pain killers on the market, plus all the other 9 a day I mentioned…. But they don’t talk about that on the commercials, do they?
Fibro sufferers are some of the nicest, strongest peope I have ever met! I talked to a good friend, who has Fibro, and we think we should all get together and make our own commercial!! Just talking about Fibro, get the word out there… Hey, this med may help some, but you also are most likely suffering from Chronic Fatigue, IBS, anxiety, depression, insomnia, numbness, and bladder issues to name a few, so you should probably not depend on this medication for much, if any, relief. Let’s all get together and make a real Fibro commercial, it would take them months to videotape us getting out of bed, trying to open soda cans or jars, trying to go to work, do our hair or get dressed, trying to sleep….. They would give up filming us after about a week of it!!”
PICTURE IT, FIBROMYALGIA WARRIORS!!!!
All of us telling it like it really is to live with fibromyalgia. We could educate the general public! Tell them what treatments do for us and what they don’t. Show them just by being ourselves!
The writer of the comment is correct – they’d give up filming. But we could have one hell of a time!
